Beer and cookies, what “Santa” would probably really like to see waiting for him (or her) under the tree after a long night of delivering presents. And thanks to Flying Dog, now getting ready for the big guy is easier than re-gifting the bedazzled, denim baseball hat your great aunt is going to give you this year.
Flying Dog’s Holiday Beer Pack is a special edition 12-pack made up of four cookie-inspired beers. You’ve probably heard of it by now, but just in case you haven’t the brewery got together with Baltimore-based Otterbein’s Bakery to create these pairings. A pretty nifty idea if you ask me.
Now, I didn’t want to end up on the naughty list so before leaving these brews and bites out for the big guy on Christmas Eve, I figured a taste test was in order and I had some friends who were game to help. It actually turned into quite the weeknight shin dig. I created some quick place settings with festive paper place mats and some cute beer tasting kits found at Target. I also whipped up some savory snacks to help round out the menu including cheese & crackers, mini grilled cheeses and chicken meatballs.
If you’re looking for a fun, easy and (at this point) last-minute menu for a holiday get-together I highly recommend throwing something like this together. The grilled cheese and meatballs were the only things that had to be prepared (and full disclosure, the meatballs were from Costco.) The whole thing came together in about an hour. Decorations and all.
So what did we try? Well, the beer pack included:
- Imperial Hefeweizen, inspired by and meant to be paired with Otterbein’s Sugar Cookies
- Oatmeal Raisin Stout, inspired by and meant to be paired with Otterbein’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
- Oak-Aged Hazelnut Scotch Ale, inspired by and meant to be paired with Otterbein’s Ginger Cookies
- Roasted Peanut Brown Ale, inspired by and meant to be paired with Otterbein’s Chocolate Chip Cookies
and we paired each with it’s respective cookie (which I found at Giant and Wegmans in Frederick, MD.)
I think Santa will be very pleased.
