What will you be eating when you wake up to the New Year on Tuesday?
How about an easy and delicious brunch that can help fulfill the hunger cravings brought on by a night of merry drinking and possibly bring you a little luck in 2013
First things first though, make something warm and caffeinated.
This was our very first attempt brewing coffee with the Chemex. I’m looking forward to experimenting with it more. Neither of us are big coffee drinkers but I hear this is the way to go.
Now that you’re a little more awake, it’ll be safe to start with the food prep. An easy quiche filled with garlicky collard greens, pancetta, and Gruyere cheese can be quickly whipped together. (Just look through a few of Martha’s recipes for a basic cooking method.)
You just need a few cloves of chopped garlic, a bunch of greens pulled off the stems and roughly torn up and some pancetta. Simply lightly brown the garlic in some butter and then throw in the greens and toss around with the pancetta until wilted. I typically just follow a general quiche outline of 4-5 eggs whipped with a little cream or milk. I usually use a store bought crust and really load up on the fillings.
It’s believed that eating greens and pork on New Year’s Day is good luck. I say eating anything in a buttery, flaky crust always bodes well.
No brunch spread would be complete without champagne. In Spain, it’s tradition to eat 12 grapes with each stroke of midnight for luck. In case eating fruit takes a back seat to toasts, just freeze a few grapes and drop them in your champagne on New Year’s Morning.
To round out the meal, layer a few simple yogurt parfaits while the quiche bakes. I made these with some french vanilla yogurt, a few pomegranate seeds and some amazingly epic granola from Marge. (Thank you to the blog world for introducing me to this.) Pomegranate seeds are another food whose many little edible seeds can be thought to represent coins, and eating things that bring money to mind is supposed to be good for your personal fortune. The granola and yogurt are just tasty. If you don’t have a pomegranate handy, or don’t want to go through the hassle of harvesting one, don’t worry about it.
I treated Rob and myself to this breakfast this past Saturday as snow fell outside and eventually made the view out our kitchen window look like this.
This meal could be easily made to serve a crowd or simply served to someone special in bed. If going the breakfast in bed route, maybe all the lucky foods will help you start the New Year by getting a little lucky ;-). (Sorry, Mom!) I only arranged everything on a tray for photographic purposes, we enjoyed our weekend breakfast like we usually do, cozily snuggled on the couch in front of the TV.
