Funny story, I managed to mistake a box of Rice Crispy “Treats” for normal Rice Crispies … yes, it’s true. I fully intended on making these with regular rice crispies, you know of the “snap, crackle and pop” variety, but I found myself staring at a bag of brown rice puff cereal at the local food co op and the thought of making another trip to Walmart made me cringe. Good news, brown rice crispies make treats that are just as delicious.
So why are these treats blushing? No they didn’t do anything cheeky ;-). I simply added a little bit of grenadine to the melted marshmallow mix before stirring in the cereal.
Blushing Rice Crispy Treats3 tablespoons unsalted butter 10 oz. regular marshmallows (1 bag) 6 cups rice crispies 1.5 – 2 tablespoons grenadine
Melt the butter over low heat. Once melted add in the marshmallows and stir until those are completely melted. Remove the mixture from heat and stir in the grenadine. Add in the cereal and stir until evenly coated. Pour the cereal mixture into a 9×13 inch pan coated in cooking oil. (Spray the spatula too.) Let cool a little and then use cookie cutters to cut out heart shapes. (A little cooking spray on those might help too.) You could, of course, just cut the usual squares, but that’s not as much fun.
What do you do when you forget one ingredient at the grocery store? Make the trip, or try to substitute as best you can?
