These are something along the lines of a Valentine to myself. Carbs and chocolate, everything I’d ever want in a slightly-more-decadent-than-normal snack. I can’t be the only one who dreams of things like this though ;-).
I, for the most part followed this pretzel recipe. I just added a step to make them more of a sweet treat. After rolling out the individual pretzel dough strands, I flattened out the dough, sprinkled a few pieces of chocolate across the dough, and then rolled the dough back up and folded each pretzel. (These chocolate pieces came from a broken up raspberry chocolate bar.)
My very first job was actually at a restaurant that specialized in soft pretzels (and still do). I never actually got to fold a pretzel while I was working there, but I managed to wrap these into recognizable shape without too much trouble. (There were squeals of glee as I finished each one :-).)
I do want to say that the baking soda boil could probably be skipped depending on how you want your pretzels to taste (just make sure not to skip brushing with butter prior to baking). The baking soda boil means a very traditional pretzel taste, not that that’s a bad thing. You also need to make sure that the chocolate is sealed in there super tight if you go with the boil-before-bake method.
Even if you have a Valentine, self-love is just as important (if not more) so be sure do something special just for you. What will you be treating yourself to for Valentine’s Day?0
