We were probably there for more like 60 hours but whatever … math has never been my strong suit.
Upon arrival on Thursday night we were greeted with wings and soft pretzels from Quaker Steak and Lube and thus began another culinary adventure in Pittsburgh :-).
After a little pampering on Friday morning we enjoyed some inventive sushi (and sake) at Nakama. The Dragon (left) and Hawaiian style (right) rolls were our favorites.
After an afternoon driving around town on a secret mission, a drink at Industry Public House in Lawrenceville and a costume change it was time for date night. My wonderful mother-in-law had recommended and made reservations for us at Altius up on Mount Washington (where they keep the best views in town.)
It felt pretty special to return to the very first restaurant Rob ever took me too in his home town (it was the Georgetowne Inn then.) An incredible meal unfolded before us as the sun set over the city. It began with truffled popcorn and cocktails with names like The Allegheny and The Southside. And any restaurant that serves an amuse bouche gets bonus points in our book. We felt adventurous and ordered the ‘Tongue and Cheek” appetizer – crispy tongue steak, braised beef cheek pierogi, melted leeks, mushrooms, veal demi-glace, horseradish crème fraiche. Both the tongue and the cheek were a first for me and won’t be the last, the dish was delicious. Our main courses included two king sized bones, one carried out my Berkshire Pork Chop, the other delicately carried out Rob’s Long Bone Short Ribs.
After dinner we headed down to the Southside and only ventured into bars that I had yet to imbibe in. Our last stop The Flats on Carson was new to both of us and we enjoyed our drinks on their second floor while we ran the gamut with the Touchtunes machine.
Oh yeah, and we managed to come to town just in time for the PIEROGI FEST!! We ate our fill in dough and potatoes (in traditional and taco form), had the required helping of haluski (pronounced Halooshki for you non Polacks) and then tried a Pie-rogi, deep fried and filled with a sweet, pumpkin-spiced cream cheese filling. Oh the bliss is spreading across my face as I’m telling you about this!
We did our best to keep it reasonable during Pierogi Fest because a trip to Monterey Bay was in store for the evening. This was another Pittsburgh institution I hadn’t been to yet. After drinks in the lounge, a great window seat, she-crab soup poured table side with fresh herbs and pancetta, a seasonal fish special served with acorn squash, beet risotto & a balsamic reduction and bites of peanut butter pretzel pie, white chocolate mousse and the Pumpkin Spice Latte (the super seasonal dessert specialty) I think I’ve been officially inducted into the Monterey Bay fan club!
And of course, no trip to the ‘burgh is complete without a hearty breakfast somewhere. Lately we’ve been hitting up First Watch in Cranberry (close to the in-laws). I really don’t care that this place is a chain. Anywhere that makes me seasonal pancakes (like the large pumpkin flavored one pictured above) and leaves me feeling like I ate something relatively healthy just wins.
And now that I feel like I’ve eaten an entire meal just looking at all of these photos, I’m going to go and take the dog for a walk. Thanks for being delicious Pittsburgh!0
